1. the different resistance systems of rowing machines
Top technologies for a realistic rowing experience
The water wheel system simulates extremely realistic rowing behavior. A paddle rotates in a container filled with water. This paddle is connected to the handle via a traction system and is driven by the user. The water provides the resistance. The more water in the container, the greater the resistance. In addition, the rowing motion creates a pleasant splashing sound, just like rowing in a lake. The Vortex VX2 from First Degree is a highly recommended professional rowing machine with a water wheel system.
The air resistance system also simulates a real rowing sensation and offers a very fluid movement. The resistance is generated by an air wheel that continues to rotate due to the constant movement. Each new stroke moves the rotating air wheel again. As with rowing in the water, the feeling of gliding into the forward motion of the boat and accelerating the boat again with each rowing movement is created.

Technologies for (price-conscious) entry
Pulling the handle sets a flywheel mass in motion in the rowing machine. A magnet-brake system, which consists of either permanent magnets or electromagnets, provides the necessary resistance. When buying a rowing machine, make sure it has a sufficiently large flywheel mass. It does not stop completely between the individual rowing strokes and thus ensures a smooth movement.
Rowing machines with a magnetic brake system can also be used to perform various strength exercises such as lat pulldowns or bicep curls.
Rowing machines with hydraulic cylinders are among the simpler machines on the market. The rowing movement is damped forwards and backwards by the cylinders. The resistance can usually be adjusted directly on the cylinders. However, it is often not so easy for beginners to set both cylinders to the same resistance level. These devices are well suited for sporadic training at home. Ambitious athletes are better advised to use the other systems, as the cylinders wear out over time and need to be replaced.
2 How do home machines differ from professional and semi-professional rowing machines?
Every piece of exercise equipment in the gym has to withstand enormous loads. This is why professional rowing machines are also designed for 24 hours of daily use. Special ball bearings and rail systems are therefore used here. Professional rowing machines in our range include the E520 Indoor Rower from First Degree Fitness and the Assault AirRower Elite.
For companies, we recommend either studio-quality or semi-professional rowing machines. These models are designed for 4 hours of daily use. The Life Fitness Row GX Trainer or First Degree Fitness E316 Indoor Rower are completely convincing in this area.
Rowing machines for home use are used for around 1 to 2 hours a day. The individual components are subjected to far less stress than in the professional and semi-professional sector, which is why manufacturers do not use high-performance bearings and rails here. This is of course also reflected in the lower price.

3. what functions does the training computer offer?
The training computers on all rowing machines display basic data such as training time, current stroke rate and power, calories burned and distance rowed. The displays are large and easy to read, as the distance between the user and the computer is greater than with other cardio machines due to the rowing motion. Studio rowing machines offer additional programs and extras, such as games and heart rate monitoring. Monitoring the heart rate protects against overloading, ensures training in the optimum heart rate range and therefore leads to better results more quickly.
With the exception of rowing machines with a magnetic brake system, the training computer cannot regulate the resistance. However, this is not important when working out on the rowing machine, as the intensity can be regulated directly via the resistance system or controlled by the exerciser themselves - with the pull force and stroke rate.



4. is training with rowing machines safe?
It is very unlikely that you will injure yourself while rowing on the machine. The manufacturers guarantee maximum safety with high-quality workmanship and numerous tests. Of course, the machines comply with all DIN standards. Detailed instructions are included with the rowing machines and should be read before training.
Our safety tips:
- No baggy look - Sports clothing that is too loose can get caught in the moving parts of the rowing machine, for example between the running rail and the rollers under the seat. Cheaper models in particular often lack covers.
- It is important to check the pulleys regularly! Training could cause the sheathing of the cable pull to wear out or the cable pull to tear. These worn parts should be replaced as soon as possible.
- The right rowing technique ensures effective training and prevents injuries.
5 How much space does a rowing machine require?
Folding rowing machines are relatively easy to store. Without this practical mechanism, a little more space should be available. Depending on the model, rowing machines have a length of more than 2 meters and a width or height of 0.5 meters.
Manufacturers such as LifeFitness or Viking attach great importance to a great design. Solid wood or elegant metal make a great visual impression, allowing the sports equipment to be stylishly integrated into the interior design(if space is limited).
6 How are rowing machines cleaned and maintained?
The manufacturers provide useful care instructions in the operating instructions. A microfiber cloth is usually sufficient to remove dust and light dirt. It is advisable to remove sweat from the handle and upholstery at regular intervals or to disinfect them. All moving parts, rollers, bearings and hinges should be lubricated from time to time. With the right care, you will be able to enjoy your new rowing machine for a long time.
7. how loud are rowing machines?
The harder the handle is pulled, the more noise the resistance system makes. With the water rowers, the water splashes in the tank, while with the air rowers an impeller generates the air flow. Nevertheless, these rowing machines can be used in the comfort of your own home. No neighbor will feel disturbed. Whether you find the rippling of the water or the blower of the AirRower more pleasant is up to you to decide.
